Course information

This course aims to prepare you to provide technical and aesthetic contributions to building projects, making sure that designs are buildable, durable, sustainable, economical and easy to maintain.

As such, you will cover a broad range of topics and should develop skills and expertise important to all construction professions: architectural design, technical knowledge and understanding, communication, problem solving and personal development.

We place an emphasis on the architectural design process, the cultural and economic environment in which development takes place, building performance analysis and the construction technologies available to achieve sustainable building solutions. We also aim to provide a solid grounding in the drawing and modelling of architectural forms, together with the research techniques to assess materials and components.

In more detail...

  • Teaching from fully qualified and experienced staff who have a high level of design and technical experience in the construction industry and who are still involved in research projects.
  • The opportunity to take part in events where you will meet members of the local design and building community, and attend professional development meetings held by the professional institutions on campus.
  • Studios and laboratories equipped with the latest versions of CAD software including 2D, 3D and visualisation software, building information management software and building performance analysis programs.

The opportunity to apply for placements with employers to gain practical experience in the construction industry.

On this course you will learn the fundamental topics that are important to all professions: technical knowledge and understanding, communication, problem solving and personal development.

The course will pay particular attention to the architectural design process, the cultural and economic environment in which development takes place, building performance analysis and the construction technologies available to achieve sustainable building solutions. You will also be given grounding in the drawing and modelling of architectural forms, and the research techniques to assess materials and components.

You will find that your timetable has a range of learning opportunities, from lectures, seminars and tutorials to laboratories, workshops and studio sessions. You will also spend a large amount of time working with other students to apply your skills to relevant engineering and design problems.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

You will be assessed through a mixture of coursework and examination. Coursework will be assessed through drawings, models, presentations and written reports and essays.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows:

  • Practical or project work: 40%
  • Formal examinations: 30%
  • Coursework, tests, essays: 10%
  • Group work: 10%
  • Presentations, posters: 10%

40% assessed by practical or project work

In a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, tutorials and project work (or later, individual project supervision) each week.
  • Medium-group teaching: 6 hours of tutorials, CAD or drawing studio each week.
  • Large-group teaching: 8 hours of lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to spend 20 hours to study and revise in your own time, including some guided study using handouts, online activities.

The content of the course continuously refers to the international context in which architecture takes place including the opportunity to go on at least one study trip overseas to look at architecture and building design outside the UK.

You will be able to study abroad for up to a year with one of our international partner institutions as part of your course. We currently have links with other universities in Malaysia, Oman, Canada, France, Germany, Poland and the Netherlands which provide opportunities for student and staff exchanges and joint student projects.

Global ready

Did you know we help more students travel internationally than any other UK university according to data from the experts in higher education data and analysis, HESA?

In 2015/16, we were able to provide a total of 2101 experiences abroad that lasted at least five days, 76% of which were our own organised trips for undergraduates and 23% from postgraduate travel.

Much of this travel is made possible through our Global Leaders Programme, which enables students to prepare for the challenges of the global employment market, as well as strengthening and developing their broader personal and professional skills.
