Course information

Motorsport engineers can work on the design, testing and production of performance vehicles or become part of a racing team responsible for improving performance before, during and after a race.

This course aims to further your analytical skills and knowledge of the fundamental scientific and managerial concepts of engineering required to carry out a comprehensive range of mechanically related tasks, in areas such as stress, temperature, kinematics and dynamics. 

Teaching is highly practical, focused on providing a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of motorsport engineering and, more importantly, how this knowledge is applied in the industry.

  • regular lectures delivered by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE);
  • the chance to be involved in exciting projects, such as Formula Student and/or Shell Eco-marathon;
  • state-of-the-art facilities including a new wind tunnel, a new CNC machining centre, a new engine test cell and a full-size shaker rig;
  • placement opportunities for you to apply for with a wide variety of motorsport and performance engineering companies, across a range of disciplines;
  • Close links with employers in the performance engineering industry, including Red Bull Racing, the Auto-Cycle Union, Lotus Cars, Penske Racing and Triumph Motorcycles;
  • this course meets, in part, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer and students will need to complete an approved format of further learning pursuant to the requirements of UK-SPEC. The BEng(Hons) also automatically meets the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

You will study subjects designed to broaden your knowledge of motorsport engineering, as well as to further your understanding of the fundamental concepts of engineering such as stress, temperature, kinematics and dynamics.

You will specialise in Performance Engineering, Design for Performance, Aerodynamics, Vehicle Dynamics, Powertrain, Advanced Materials and Manufacture, and the Motorsport Group Project.

Your main themes of study will be:

  • Design: the innovative resolution of design problems focused on commercially viable solutions.
  • Analysis: you will learn to use industry standard software to model, analyse and validate vehicle behaviour, components and systems.
  • Management: the application of principles and practices utilised to assure effective business operation.
  • Sustainability: an ethical approach to work by protecting the best interests of life and the environment.
  • Practical: investigation and analysis using laboratory, workshop and computer-based techniques.

Your course features a range of learning opportunities, from lectures, seminars and tutorials to laboratories and workshops. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you can develop professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows:

  • Formal examinations: 35%
  • Coursework, tests, essays: 40%
  • Practical or project work: 10%
  • Group work etc: 10%
  • Presentations, posters etc: 5%

In a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 1 hour tutor group session each week with your personal tutor
  • Medium group teaching: 7 hours of tutorial, practical laboratory or workshops each week
  • Large group teaching: 8-12 hours of lectures each week.

Additionally, you should spend between 16-20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time – including some guided study using handouts, online activities etc

Our course aims to produce the world’s best motorsport engineer. We encourage you to study abroad as part of your course, in Europe (through the Erasmus scheme) or in America or Asia through out Centre for Global Engagement.
