Course information

The programme seeks to provide an undergraduate education in professional management within the energy industry, with a specific and dedicated focus on the oil and gas industries.

It covers the processes, threats and opportunities of the international energy sector in the 21st century. This course emphasises the need to develop sustainable energy solutions in our growing global world, and aims to teach you about alternative energy sources alongside fossil fuels, providing the opportunity to choose where to focus your interest.

Economics and health, safety and environmental (HSE) risks are two main strands that run through the course, along with an analytical approach to understanding energy production, and the environmental, social and political impacts of energy production.

You will start exploring fundamental issues of energy resource management including the organisation and operation of the oil and gas industry, geo-systems, economics and electricity production.

The focus on preparing students for successful futures sets Coventry apart as a university.

The Add+vantage modules teach a range of work experience and extra-curricular activities that are taken each year, and broaden students knowledge and skills within a work focused environment. There is a very wide range of Add+vantage free-choice subject areas, and they are arranged in themes.

In the second year you will extend your studies into areas such as nuclear and renewable energy, petroleum technology, risk assessment, climate change and international trading in oil and gas. You will also develop analytical skills needed to undertake quantitative and qualitative investigations.

Overview

In your final year you will take a look at the future of global energy management and have opportunities to specialise in petroleum economics, health and safety management, environmental pollution and sustainability. You will also have the chance to obtain an IOSH accredited Managing Safely certificate and undertake a research project in a subject of your choice.

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, site visits and practical classes. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows:

  • Coursework: 60%
  • Formal examinations: 25%
  • Project work: 15%

In a typical week you will have up to 16 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 4 hours of small group teaching each week
  • Medium group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week
  • Large group teaching: 6 hours of lectures each week

Additionally, you will be expected to complete 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time

Focusing as it does on a rapidly developing global industry, this course offers ample opportunity to enhance your international experience. We have recently hosted a summer school for Saudi Aramco graduate trainees and in all subjects draw extensively on international material, much of which is linked directly to the research activities of your tutors.

You will also have the opportunity to discuss key energy issues with students from around the world as part of our student-led online international learning network.

In 2015/16, we were able to provide a total of 2101 experiences abroad that lasted at least five days, 76% of which were our own organised trips for undergraduates and 23% from postgraduate travel.

Much of this travel is made possible through our Global Leaders Programme, which enables students to prepare for the challenges of the global employment market, as well as strengthening and developing their broader personal and professional skills.

Your understanding of the petroleum industry and more sustainable energy resources, together with specialist skills in risk, safety and financial management can help you find employment with national and multinational oil companies, environmental consultancies, government agencies and regulatory bodies. For example, recent graduates from the department are developing their career in energy resources with Severn Trent Water, Lloyds Register and a nuclear decommissioning authority.
