In more detail...

  • Integrated project work, running through each year of the course, where theory is put into practice as soon as it is learned.
  • Academic staff who are active researchers and consultants in their field and have professional industrial experience which they aim to bring into their teaching.
  • Opportunities to apply for industrial placements with a range of local and regional companies where you can exercise your technical skills in a professional environment.

Studying with a wide range of other professional disciplines in an integrated School of Energy, Construction and Environment reflecting the modern interdisciplinary nature of construction projects.

The course develops your core knowledge, intellectual and practical skills to enter professional roles in the construction industry.

The course themes include: construction technology, traditional quantity surveying skills – building and civil engineering measurement and documentation, construction contracts and procurement, construction cost management and commercial management.

You will find that your course is taught using lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratories, workshops and studio sessions. These will be supervised by academic and technical support staff. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

You will work with staff on real-world problems from industry, commerce and research groups, as you would in professional practice; this means that you develop professional skills at the same time as you learn the technical content of your degree.

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows:

  • Formal examinations 40%
  • Coursework, essays 20%
  • Practical or project work 20%
  • Group work 10%
  • Presentations, posters etc. 10%

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed

40% assessed by exams

In a typical week you will have up to 20 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, tutorials and project work (or later, individual project supervision) each week.
  • Medium group teaching: 6 hours of tutorials, CAD or drawing studio each week.
  • Large group teaching: 8 hours of lectures each week.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time – including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.

The Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management course attracts students from around the globe. This creates a vibrant atmosphere and helps in preparing you for a career in business. If you wish to study abroad for part of your studies, you can do this using our extensive Erasmus links for countries in the European Union. Links are also available for study in America and Asia.

Did you know we help more students travel internationally than any other UK university according to data from the experts in higher education data and analysis, HESA?

In 2015/16, we were able to provide a total of 2101 experiences abroad that lasted at least five days, 76% of which were our own organised trips for undergraduates and 23% from postgraduate travel.

Much of this travel is made possible through our Global Leaders Programme, which enables students to prepare for the challenges of the global employment market, as well as strengthening and developing their broader personal and professional skills.
